Whether you are struggling with life
issues, such as divorce, the loss of a loved one, job-related
stress, or with more long-standing emotional problems,
such as depression, anxiety attacks, or difficulties
controlling your anger; Dr. Fasse is open to meeting
with you and determining what the best course of treatment
would be for you.
If you have never been in
therapy before, you may
feel that it is a daunting process just to find someone
you feel comfortable with. Dr. Fasse will take an
empathic and collaborative approach to working with
you. Below is an outline of what to expect in therapy.
In your initial meeting, she
will ask for detailed information about your current
problems and some
of your personal history. At the end of this extended
first meeting, together you will decide if treatment
with Dr. Fasse is right for you. If you feel comfortable
in beginning treatment, you will discuss goals and
what you would like to gain from therapy, as well
as determine a schedule for your appointments. Individual
counseling sessions are usually 50 minutes in length
and are held once each week. However longer and/or
more
frequent
sessions are also available, if needed. If you decide
that treatment with Dr. Fasse is not right for you,
she will be happy to give you the names of several
other therapists in the area who might be better
able to help you with your specific concerns.
During the course of therapy, Dr.
Fasse will use various techniques to help facilitate
your progress
toward your goals. Much of therapy will involve an
open, honest dialogue about your thoughts, feelings,
and behaviors. If indicated, Dr. Fasse can also train
you in various stress reduction techniques, including:
deep breathing, visualization, and progressive relaxation.
She will work with you to come up with solutions
to your problems and to help you gain insight into
certain patterns in your life that may be contributing
to your difficulties. At times, she may assign homework
(reading, writing exercises, etc.) to be done between
counseling sessions.
Dr. Fasse views therapy as
a collaborative effort, which will require your very active involvement.
This will require that you are open, honest and able
to accept feedback regarding your thoughts, feelings,
and behaviors. Dr. Fasse will also ask you for feedback
on how you think your treatment is progressing. Therapy
may feel uncomfortable or cause you some anxiety
at times, as you may begin to view your life and
your self differently. With your active participation,
therapy can yield a number of benefits, including
a reduction in distress, positive changes in behavior,
and improved interpersonal relationships. However,
there is no guarantee that psychotherapy will yield
positive or intended results. At times, therapy may
lead to changes in relationships, career, or other
behaviors that were not originally intended.
